The placing of asbestos containing materials on ships is not allowed according to the requirements of SOLAS regulation II -1/3 -5. As of January 1st 2011 the use of ACMs is completely discontinued and not allowed earlier it was allowed for some limited purposes. The policy has been made by the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) and cannot be rejected or neglected.

A port state controlled licensed contractor is responsible for the removal of asbestos containing materials. The materials are sprayed asbestos coatings, asbestos insulations, asbestos lagging. It should be strictly noticed that not everyone is allowed to carry out such functions as asbestos causes serious problems. Its removal should only be carried out by a contractor.

Asbestos removal is a really hard and hazardous job. It contains huge risks as it contains higher risk asbestos containing materials. When these materials are removed they release larger quantities of asbestos which causes diseases such as cancer. There are some lower risk materials too such as asbestos cement which are less risky than those which release huge amount of asbestos. Therefore the workers who are associated with removal of high risk ACMs require special training. They are trained to be professionally expert as it could cause them serious health problems. These workers are required to follow strict processes and procedures. They are trained completely to follow the work practices.
