Marine Asbestos

According to the requirements of SOLAS regulation II -1/3 -5 the placing of asbestos containing materials on ships is not allowed. This is a policy which has been made by the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) and cannot be avoided. It was allowed for some limited purposes but as of January 1st 2011 the use of ACMs is completely discontinued and not allowed.

Asbestos has got very different properties. It is a set of naturally occurring silicate minerals which are famous because of their physical properties. It has been used in the 20th century for various purposes. The purpose of not allowing asbestos anymore is that it causes serious health problems such as asbestosis and the cancer mesothelioma. It has been said that the effects will also increase into the 21st century. Many new ships which come from the developing countries are found to contain marine or ship asbestos containing materials.

Ship Asbestos

has been the cause of great and harmful health diseases. According to a study the harmful effects are more likely to be faced in the shipyard. It was found that 86% of the workers in the ship repair work whose employment years were more than 20 developed lung cancer which is a very alarming situation. The risk of spreading of the diseases is increased when asbestos containing ships are renovated.
